Who are you?

Adrian Wallwork, the founder of English at Academics is the author of a series of books on academic writing and presenting. The books are published by Springer Science, the world's largest book publishers. The two managing editors at English for Academics have 25 years and 10 years experience, respectively, in revising scientific papers. In addition to the managing editors, we have an editing team of native English speakers, mainly from GB and the USA, with either Italian, French or Spanish as their second language. They all have considerable experience in revising documents and teaching English. They have degrees in a variety of disciplines. We are confident that our service is one of the best in the academic world, in both quality and cost. We believe we are the only company in Italy that specializes in revisions and translations for the world of research.

Where are you located?

In Pisa, Italy. In fact the whole team of proofreaders and editors, apart from one, is all located in Pisa. This means that the managing editors can constantly supervise and train the team.

What languages do you speak?

All the people who work for English for Academics are native English speakers with a good level of Italian, French or Spanish. Our knowledge of your mother tongue means that if we are revising the English of a paper written by you, we can mentally translate into French/Italian/Spanish any parts of your paper that are not totally comprehensible, and then rephrase them directly or suggest alternatives.

Who will my editor be?

We employ people who are experts both in proofreading and in the English language. They also have a proficient knowledge of French, Italian or Spanish. They are likely to have already corrected several papers in that field or a similar one. Therefore they will be familiar with your field and will only make appropriate changes to your manuscript. If they make any corrections that they are not sure of, they will highlight these in blue.

Will my editor be an expert in my field?

Your editor will be an expert in correcting papers in your field but not a technical specialist. We regularly correct papers for mathematicians, biologists, chemists, physicists, engineers, computer scientists etc. Our expertise lies not in the technical matter of your paper - you are the expert there. Instead, we are experts in making your paper flow better by correcting the grammar and vocabulary, removing redundancy, removing ambiguity, carefully using punctuation, and checking the spelling (even for differences between US and UK English). In any case we have found that 95% of what we correct does not depend the field of research. We have found that if we know your native language this has a much greater effect on our ability to revise your paper than if we were an expert in your field of research.

I am worried that if I use your services I will get a different editor each time. How likely is this to happen?

Generally speaking, at least one of the two editors who works on your paper will remain with you for as long as you choose to use our services. Because we are a small team and because revising and translating is our primary job, we can build up long lasting relations with our clients who come back to us year after year (our oldest clients have been with us more than 25 years) because they have established a high level of trust with us.

How can you help me improve my chances of publishing my paper?

Firstly, by making your paper clearer to read and giving it more structure and impact. Secondly, by making sure that the referees of your paper will NOT say in their report that 'the English needs improving'. The only time this has happened after we have made a revision was a case when the referee was not a native speaker and included the statement to cover him/herself.
